Creating Custom Nameservers
A private nameserver is a nameserver branded with your own domain. For instance, ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com are examples of custom/private nameservers. Having your own private nameservers is particularly useful if you plan to run your own web hosting company with a Reseller Hosting plan and want to keep your nameservers white label.
Register Your Nameservers
To begin, you will need to register your nameservers at your domain's registrar. This guide will focus on the domain nameserver registration process at Asura Hosting, but the steps are generally similar across most registrars.
- Log in to our Client Area and navigate to Domains > My Domains. Click on the domain for which you would like to add custom nameservers.
- You will be directed to the domain overview page. On the left side, you will see a "Manage" block with a list of actions. Click on the Private Nameservers option.
- On the Private Nameservers page, locate the Register a Nameserver Name form. Enter the sub-domain prefix you wish to use, such as NS1, and the server's IP address. Click Save Changes to register the new private nameserver. Remember to register both nameservers: ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com.
Once registered, you will need to add the DNS records for the newly registered nameservers within your web hosting account. The steps vary depending on the control panel you are using. Below are the instructions for adding the new nameservers' DNS in cPanel and Direct Admin.
Adding the New Nameservers DNS in cPanel
- Log in to your cPanel account. (The login URL is usually found at domain.com:2083)
- Navigate to the Domain Section > Zone Editor.
- Add the "A" records for the nameserver by clicking on the A Record button next to the domain name.
- Fill in the form with the nameserver details, including the server's IP and the nameserver itself. Once you have added the necessary details, click on the Add an A Record button. Your DNS changes should now take effect. Ensure you do this for both nameservers.
Adding the New Nameservers DNS in Direct Admin
- Log in to your Direct Admin account. (The login URL is usually found at domain.com:2222)
- Navigate to the Account Manager section > DNS Management.
- Click on the Add Record button.
- Fill in the form with all the nameserver details, including the server's IP and the nameserver itself. Ensure the Record Type is set to A. After adding the necessary details, click on the Add button. Your DNS changes should now take effect. Make sure to do this for both nameservers.
Please allow a couple of hours for the DNS to propagate worldwide before using your new nameservers.
